Schema Therapy is a fairly modern therapy and the work product of Dr. Jeff Young. It's a synthesis of many other therapy models such as Psychodynamic, Attachment, and many others. It can be viewed as an extension of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) since it works on the same principles. Schema Therapy looks for the person's SCHEMAs (as in Schemes or Schemata) which are the first interpretations or conclusions we make about ourselves, the world, and the future based on our earliest environment. These conclusions may or may not be true or accurate. They are the emotional and physiological perceptions of the person. We then begin to generalize these concepts to all people, and all time and situations. We devise coping mechanisms to survive the way we see ourselves and the world. Imagine for a moment if these perceptions were inaccurate, and what would that mean to you today. So, the bulk of the therapy work is designed to correct these inaccurate perceptions and coping mechanisims attached to them.
Schema therapy is mostly used for chronic problems and personality disorders.
Other advantage of Schema Therapy is that it's much shorter than the old classical talk therapies. So, instead of spending years it's basically months. Additionally, rather than spending years trying to figure out the origins and possible causes of problems, a simple take-home questionnaire (YSQ-L3) can reduce it to one session. The rest of the work from there on is how to correct these issues and not fall victims for them any more.
It's a highly effective therapy, short in time, and therefore it would cost much less than spending years in the therapist's office trying to put all the pieces together.
